To be considered for a position, dancers must be in great physical shape due to the highly demanding schedule. Dancers flock (or is it prance?) from all over the world for the opportunity to dance with the Rockettes, but not just any female dancer can audition. Four Radio City Rockettes reflect on how their formative years at The Ailey School and Pace University helped prepare them for careers in professional dance. Just recently, the auditions for the 2017/18 Christmas Spectacular saw almost 1000 dancers lined up outside Radio City Music Hall with the hope of being cast in this illustrious company. Rogers is the youngest girl to take the stage as a Radio City Rockette and has been working as a dancer turned actress since 1963! Who said dancers don’t enjoy long and fruitful careers?! Auditions ![]() Another possible household name is Suzanne Rogers, who plays Maggie Horton in the well-known soap opera Days of our Lives. She is now better known for dancing alongside Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire in numerous, popular musicals in Hollywood and NYC. Vera-Ellen is one such example, she kick-started her career with this company. How the performers are "athletes in heels and lipstick," how "the audience doesn't always realize the insane demand behind the show," and how "as far as work environment goes, it's pretty great, because you're really just hanging out with your friends all day.A lot of successful dancers and actors have begun their professional careers performing as a Rockette. At 5 P.M., when she pops into her favorite nail salon for her weekly manicure, the tourists poring over laminated maps during their pedicures perk up as soon as they hear her talking about her life as a Rockette. (Howe laughs when I ask if she named her dog, Heidi, after Project Runway's Klum, saying only that the model is just "the nicest.")Īll these tangential responsibilities-the press, the partnerships-have molded Howe into even more of a room commander than she already was. ![]() ![]() (Really, many of the Rockettes' most meticulously choreographed moments work a magic more captivating than any CGI trick I've ever seen.) These days, Rockettes spend much of their time promoting the brand, working to lure the Transformers generation to a spectacle they might consider nostalgic. And since even veteran dancers (like Howe) have to audition for the show each year, they spend whatever late winter/early spring "off-season" they have taking dance lessons or teaching fitness classes, like Howe does at Chelsea's Body by Simone. This year, they began the annual audition process in April, filmed YouTube videos over the summer, and started rehearsing six hours a day in September in order to nail what Howe calls "precision choreography." The Christmas Spectacular, however, is only performed from early November through December 31. Still, while it's definitely crunch time, the Rockettes aren't as seasonal as one might expect. (The Rockettes call each other "ladybirds" ladybirds "swoop" places instead of merely going or stopping by.) At nearby eatery The Little Beet, Jantzie and Howe order kale salads, but the real allure of their lunch is probably the Vitamin D they get on the walk to and from Radio City-a rarity for them this time of year, when they can have as many as five performances a day. Post-show, at 12:30 P.M., Howe grabs a friend, Kristin Jantzie, and asks her if she wants to "swoop" to lunch. Questions regarding the audition process for the Color Guard should be directed to Chad Clum, UToledo Color Guard Instructor:. Remote accommodations can be made if contacted in advance. There's general dancing-world vocabulary-and then there's the Rockette lexicon. Color Guard - Auditions for the 2022 season will take place Saturdays on-campus, April 30 & June 11, 11am-5pm. ![]()
